PRESS STATEMENT

FALLACY OF HASTY GENERALIZATION!

To leave an error uncorrected is to encourage intellectual immorality. A group issued a press statement yesterday, June 8, 2006, titled; “Who Created These Militants?” The group known as North-East Youth Movement cited quotations from Daily Independent newspaper and Sunday Champion newspaper which were logical but committed a fundamental blunder by quoting Time international magazine edition of May 22, 2006, which carried a clause: “Mujahid Dokubo–Asari, one of the youth leaders armed by politician…” This is based on falsehood and is a complete distortion of history of political development.

However, we will like to put the records straight, by making the following clarifications:

1. Our esteemed and patriotic leader, Alh. Mujahid Dokubo-Asari has never been a member of the ruling People Democratic Party (PDP).

2. He was founding member of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and later joined the National Conscience Party (NCP) in 2002.

3. He has been a freedom fighter even from his days at the University of Calabar as a student unionist.

4. He is a prince of Kalabari Kingdom from the lineage of the great warrior, king Amachree I, founder of Kalabari Kingdom.

5. His father was a highly placed High Court Judge when Alh. Dokubo–Asari was growing up in the best part of Port-Harcourt along with children of personalities like Jeremiah Useni, Zamani Lekwot, governors, commissioners, Judges and wealthy businessmen.

6. He is from a higher intellectual, ideological and social background than Dr. Peter Odili.

7. His relationship with Dr. Peter Odili and other ruling party politician was in his capacity as the independent President of Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) world-wide and not a boy-master or thug-politician type and it will be fool-hardy to believe so.

8. Fully aware of his pound background, he cannot stoop so low as to allow himself to be used as a thug or to betray the people he loves so much.

Furthermore, the statement failed to differentiate between the armed gangs/cults and armed nationalist. The former being used by the River State ruling party politicians to terrorize, assassinate and intimidate people for the purpose of rigging elections, while the later is fighting on the side of the people against subjugation, dehumanization, exploitation and oppressor violence. Calling all of them militants is a fallacy of hasty generalization.

Finally we wish to use this medium to advise people with good cases to cross check their fact and information before publication so as not to damage their good message. We remain as committed as ever in our struggle against domination, subjugation and exploitation.

Thanks.

The struggle is unstoppable!
