PRESS STATEMENT
SENATOR FEMI
OKUROUNMU’S COMMENT ON NIGER DELTA - REACTIONARY
There is always a price for freedom. When a people are
ready to pay that price, they do not care about condemnation from
anti-progressive or reactionary forces. Freedom is never free. We
know that the news expressed by Senator Femi Okurounmu, the supposed
secretary of Afenifere, in an interview with the Punch newspaper on
Thursday8 June 2006 and published on
Friday 8 June
2006, were his personal views and not that of Afenifere. It is
rather, his views in his capacity as a stooge of the maximum ruler
of the Nigerian State Gen. Obasanjo.
In the said interview, Senator Femi Okurounmu made the
following controversial and reactionary remarks:
1. That the worsening security situations in the
Niger Delta was a
threat to
democracy in Nigeria.
2. That the
Federal Government of the Nigerian State should intensify its
pacification efforts especially in the development programme of the
area;
3. That all
the same time, the people more than anything else, will be pacified
if the presidency goes to the Niger Delta
4. That if
somebody from the Niger Delta the president, they will not like to
destabilize the country as they are doing now.
4. That he
opposes the insistence on the release of our esteemed and patriotic
leader, Alhagi Mujahid Abubakr Dokubo-Asari, by Niger Delta freedom
fighters.
Regrettably, the Chief
Scribe of Afenifere who is supposed to be an embodiment of knowledge
and ideas of democracy nationalism and self-determination is too
ignorant to know, or too unclear headed to admit that: the situation
in the Niger Delta is one of domination and exploitation; that the
people have resolved to resist and combat their oppressors; no
country can be democratic without its people being first of all
free; there is no democracy in Nigeria to be threatened because
Nigeria is not a free country in the first instance; and our peoples
are demanding for self-determination and resource takeover/control
which are in line with the philosophy of the pioneer leader of
Afenifere, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Furthermore, students of history
of liberation struggle know that the arrest of any freedom fighter
is always political and prejudicial you can not be guaranteed a fair
trial as was the case in the State Vs chief Obafemi Awolowo, State
vs Chief Olusegun Obansanjo and now, State Vs Alh. Mujahid
Dokubo-Asari, where the trial judge, as well as the court of Appeal
Justices ruled that they believe that he is a threat to National
security even when trial has not commenced. This means that he has
been assumed guilty when Pa Awolowo, Obasanjo, Beko Ransom-kuti, all
Yorubas where standing in for trial, people demanded for their
release by making the country ungovernable.
However we wish to use this medium to restate our earlier
position in opposition to Senator Femi Okurounmu’s wish, against the
presidential aspirants from the South-South especially those who
canvassed for Third Term, chiefly among them Dr. Peter Odili. Their
Presidential candidacy will further aggravate the tension in the
Niger Delta as they are seen as representatives of the forces of
occupation and exploitation of the
Nigerian State in
the region.
Zoning of Presidency to the South-South is not the way out
of this present imbroglio. The successful implementation of the
resolutions of a sovereign National conference endorsing
self-determination will finally resolve the Niger Delta question and
enthrone genuine democracy and path to industrialization the Niger
Delta needs and have the sympathy of the oppressed masses and not
feudalobourgeous gestapo’s like you.
Finally, we demand an unreserved apology from Senator Femi
Okurounmu to the
Niger
delta people. we demand that he should be expelled from Afenifere
leadership. we advise that he subject his views to dialectical
analysis before making them public. We sympathize with the
leadership and membership of Afemifere and the Yoruba Nation over
the unfortunate, disgraceful, provocative unclear headed,
reactionary, incredible unprecedented, uncomradely, unideological
and unintelectual vituperations (capable of inciting civil war) of
the supposed secretary of the Pan-Yoruba Socio –culture
organization, Afenifere nevertheless we shall continue to
collaborate with progressive individuals and organization
representing other regions in the course of advancing the cause of
advancing the cause of our people.
We wish to make it abundantly clear that Alh. Mujahid
Dokubo-Asari is not begging for release neither is the Niger Delta
begging to be liberated. we are taking our destiny in our hands.
Thank you
The struggle continues/victory is sure!
Mark Olise.
